Boiler or stove heating in the house provides for the installation of a chimney, which in most cases leads to the roof. An obligatory part of the chimney pipe is a cap, which is installed at the end of the chimney. It is also called an umbrella, a visor, a weather vane or a lid, which can have a different shape, size and design.
Hardware stores sell finished products made of galvanized sheet steel, which can be immediately installed on the chimney cap. But anyone with minimal metalworking skills can make a pipe cap on their own.
It seems obvious to many that a cap on the pipe is necessary.
The main task of the device is not limited to protecting the chimney from precipitation, dust and debris. The functions of the pipe umbrella include:
The main role of the cap is obvious - it protects the chimney from the penetration of atmospheric moisture into the heating system, which is extremely undesirable and negatively affects the operation of boiler equipment.
But there are also counterarguments against installing a cap:
The cap on the chimney pipe will not interfere, provided that it is correctly selected and installed taking into account the requirements of SNiP and safety regulations.
From a technical point of view, a cap is a special metal device that protects the chimney outlet from the negative effects of atmospheric factors. It should not in any way affect the calculated ones, not distort the initial conditions for the movement of air flows, etc. The presence of other more complex devices on the chimney should be provided at the heating design stage.
Important. Before installing the cap, carefully study the requirements of regulations, industry documents and SP 7.13130.2013.
As you noticed, not all chimneys have caps, since the owners of the building have their own beliefs, they are often contradictory, but everyone has the right to life. Before making a final decision, you should familiarize yourself with the point of view of opponents and supporters of such structures.

On the roof of buildings, the direction of the wind changes depending on the size, location and angle of slopes. To prevent the occurrence of reverse thrust, special engineering calculations of heating are made, which regulate the height of the chimney depending on its location and distance from the ridge. The wind on level ground never blows downwards, only eddies from the roof can give it such a direction. Another reason for reverse draft is the complete absence of natural air flow into the room or too powerful forced exhaust ventilation. A protective hood, if properly sized and typed, breaks up the airflow and ensures proper draft in the chimney.
There is one problem here - only the net protects from birds, the visor must be protected around the entire perimeter. Frozen condensate may appear on the grid and critically reduce traction. It is useless to clean, water under certain climatic conditions will freeze again. Sometimes you have to go up to the roof in winter, remove the grid and thus restore traction. This is undesirable, doing any work on the roof in winter is very dangerous.
Completely correct statement. But for this you need not a complex decorative product, but only one of its elements - a cap.
A beautiful cap of the original design really has a positive effect on the appearance. There are exclusive projects that allow emphasizing the prestige of the building and the solid financial position of their owners. |
As you can see from the list, the number of positive and negative consequences from installing the cap is approximately equal, hence the conclusion - make your own decision. But remember one universal requirement of regulations: all nozzles and fixtures should not interfere with the free exit of smoke and not worsen the calculated performance.
There are a huge number of different models of caps, they differ in functionality, geometric dimensions, materials of manufacture and appearance. But they all have mandatory elements that ensure stability and performance.
As for the appearance, here each master can be a personal designer. But we do not recommend starting the design and manufacture of a cap from scratch. It is necessary to carefully study the available information, understand the purpose and influence of each element on the performance of the cap. Only then will you be able to not only make your own changes to the designs, but also understand the consequences of your actions. In this article, we will provide step-by-step instructions for making a cap. And first you need to get a little familiar with the theory.
We will make a cap from a copper sheet: this one is quickly covered with a thin film of oxides and in the future is not afraid of the harmful effects of aggressive chemical compounds, and they are always present in smoke. The thickness of the sheet is 0.6 mm, do not take it thinner, it is easier to work with, but it does not have sufficient mechanical strength, it can deform, bend, etc. The process will be much faster and its quality will increase if you have access to a cutting machine and bending car.
copper sheet
To perform the work, it is required to prepare a metal ruler, a square, an awl.
Step 1. Draw a sketch of the planned cap. We recommend choosing the base model online, making adjustments for linear dimensions. If desired, add original decorative elements.
Step 2. On a sheet of copper, transfer the details of the cap. Mark the outline of the structure. You can zoom in, so you can see all the nuances more easily. During the transfer of dimensions, always leave 0.5 cm for rolling.
Practical advice. It is much easier to work not on a whole sheet, but on separate blanks for each element. To do this, they must first be cut to the available sizes, and then markup should be done on each separately.
Experienced craftsmen strongly recommend detailing each element, they once again check all the nuances and only after that they transfer the image to the metal surface. On copper, you can draw with special felt-tip pens or an ordinary awl. The second option is much better, it has thinner lines. In addition, you do not have to then clean the product from traces of the felt-tip pen.
Step 3. Cut out the piece with metal scissors. If you have plasma cutting, then cutting can be done with this unit. Small cuts along the length must be made with right and left scissors. Pay attention to which direction you need to bend the metal and, depending on this feature, choose one or another scissors. Then it will be easier to make various bends and connections.
Metal shears
Using the same algorithm, cut out all the remaining blanks.
If there is a minimum of knowledge and skills, then these operations are not very difficult. If the work is being done for the first time, then it is recommended for the practical development of some operations to practice on unnecessary pieces of metal. It doesn't have to be copper, use cheap sheet metal.
Step 1. The bending of the base blanks begins with the rolling of the edges. The workpiece is precisely set on the machine and the metal is bent by raising the table. Such operations can be done manually with a mallet, but the quality will be much worse. In addition, it takes only a few seconds to bend all the elements on the machine, the manual method will require much more time and effort.
sheet bending machine
Step 2. Make the first part of the base, an additional bottom bend provides increased strength, it is always recommended to provide it. The angles are indicated on the drawing and controlled by the protractor during bending. Some machines have fixed templates, a specific mechanical bending technology has almost no effect on the algorithm of actions. It is recommended to roll on the bases, the convex line controls the place where the element is fixed on the chimney wall and increases its stability.
Step 3. Start assembling the base of the cap. Special pliers are required for work; with this tool, separate the fastening details of individual elements into a single structure in different directions.
Step 4. Lay all the workpieces on a flat surface, check the dimensions and correctness of the bends of the connecting ends. Using pliers, bend the ends and assemble the elements together. Do not close the locks yet, but only prepare. The work requires skill, do not rush, do not damage the front surfaces. You need to know that the correction of dents will always be noticeable, and such traces indicate a low qualification of the master.
Step 5. Close the locks with mallets, the bottom table should only be metal from shaped rolled products, the dimensions are selected depending on the parameters of the product. An experienced craftsman has many different profiled segments for such purposes, which he uses during the work.
This completes the assembly of the base for the cap, you can start making a cover, or an umbrella that protects the chimney pipe from above.
First, the drawing is carefully studied and, if necessary, each element is detailed on an enlarged scale. In our case, the roof resembles a complex hipped four-slope structure, consists of two trapezoids and two triangles. This option is most suitable for rectangular chimneys.
Step 1. Transfer the dimensions of the slopes to the metal, as always, use a metal ruler and an awl. Do not forget to draw a tail for a hem at each corner of the element. The length can be arbitrary, each master gets used to his own. The parameters are given within 5–15 mm, there are no strict restrictions. Remember that the length of the top hem should be twice the fixed bottom hem. The decision should be made in such a way as to minimize the amount of non-productive waste. It is enough to draw one element, check the correctness of all sizes, cut it out, and then use it as a template for the second one. On triangular slopes, releases of 30 mm, on trapezoidal slopes of 15 mm.
Step 2. Cut out blanks with metal scissors. Do not forget that for small elements, depending on the side of the bend, a left or right tool is selected.
Step 3. Start bending parts. After everything is prepared for connection, lay them out again on a flat table and check the position. There is still time to correct minor errors. Roll the stiffeners in the middle of the plane and make a bend in the lower part, it further increases the bending resistance. We have already mentioned above that the structure will be affected by large snow and wind forces, it is necessary to take measures to increase the strength of the elements.
Step 4. Collect an umbrella, this is done in several stages.
After the roof is completely ready, you can start making the legs.
Step 5. On a piece of copper of suitable size, draw the details. It is not necessary to cut off a new sheet, you can use waste, they form a sufficient amount to prepare small elements. The total width of the blanks is approx. 110 mm, the width for rolling is approx. 25 mm. Dimensions may vary depending on the parameters of the segments.
Step 6. Cut the blanks for the legs, bend the rolling. The rivet will be made through two layers of metal, the increase in strength is performed by rolling. Drill holes for rivets.
Now it remains to assemble the roof, legs and body together. If you plan to protect from birds, then a copper mesh must be attached around the perimeter. Remember that it can create a lot of problems in the winter. The grid is additionally fixed with specially prepared corners. Fix the roof with rivets.
The design is completely ready, go up to the roof and install it on a brick chimney.
Through the chimney, a mixture of gases with products of combustion of fuel from fireplaces, stoves and heating boilers exits the street. Looking at private houses, you can see that the head of the pipe is crowned with a special visor or umbrella. At first glance, these devices, decorated with figured forging, intricate patterns and figurines, give the impression that they are just a decorative element. In fact, the chimney cap is an important element of the smoke exhaust system, the correct design and installation of which affects the efficiency of its operation. This article will talk about the principles of operation, types and methods of self-manufacturing of deflectors with your own hands.
A chimney cap is a device resembling an umbrella or a visor in appearance, installed on the head of the pipe in order to protect it from moisture. There is a huge variety of variations in the appearance of wind vanes, depending on the shape and size of the smoke exhaust duct. The design of caps of all types consists of the following elements:
Important! For a chimney, you can make a do-it-yourself cap from sheet metal, however, more complex models are easier to buy or order. The most convenient type in maintenance and operation is a protective umbrella with an opening lid. Due to the mobility of this element, the protective visor is not removed during.
To make a durable cap for use sheet metal that is not subject to corrosion. Do-it-yourself manufacturing from galvanized steel, copper or aluminum is common. The umbrella on the copper head has a noble shade, it looks respectable, but it often becomes a “victim” of non-ferrous metal collectors.
The abundance of shapes and types of chimneys force manufacturers to produce caps of various shapes, styles, sizes. In construction stores there are products of the following types:
Note! Vanes are supplied with additional functional elements: dampers, double roofs, folding doors. Do not get carried away with elaborate details, because the main thing in choosing a deflector is durability and efficiency. An ill-conceived shape can cause noise or vibration in the pipe.
The cap on the chimney not only protects against the ingress of debris and water into the smoke exhaust duct, it affects the traction force. The air stream moving horizontally or at an angle is divided and goes down, this causes a "sucking" effect. Due to this, a zone with reduced pressure is created, into which smoke from the furnace rushes. The protective deflector performs the following functions:
Important! Although the protective chimney umbrella is considered an element of decor, it is primarily a functional element of smoke removal. A properly selected deflector should not create noise or vibration inside the chimney duct.
To make a chimney visor with your own hands, it is better to choose a simpler model. For work, you will need galvanized sheet steel, metal shears, bends, a marker, cardboard, a welding machine. The process is performed in the following order:
Important! It is easiest to make a do-it-yourself chimney cap if you make it from a sheet of metal curved in an arc. When creating a drawing, keep in mind that in winter the weight of the snow cap falls on the brackets, so choose a metal of sufficient thickness and strength.
When making an umbrella to protect the chimney from moisture penetration, accurately measure the dimensions of the pipe. A properly selected deflector model improves the appearance of the roof and optimizes the operation of the smoke exhaust system.
House owners often resort to the use of elements in the form of various caps and umbrellas, which, as it seems at first glance, serve to decorate chimneys. At the same time, such nozzles not only improve the aesthetic perception of the structure, but also provide useful functionality. Usually the so-called chimney visor is made on its own, since this does not require serious knowledge and skills. Although, along with the simple design of these elements, there are quite intricate crafts that are problematic to build without the appropriate experience.
A chimney cap is a device designed to protect the chimney from moisture. The appearance of such visors can be different, which depends both on the preferences of the owner of the house and on the configuration of the pipe.
Include:
Keep in mind! It is quite possible to assemble a chimney cap yourself, but only if you want to install a fairly simple wind vane. Models that are more complex in terms of design features are much more profitable to order or buy.
If you have a choice, it is best to give preference to those models that are equipped with an opening lid. This will allow for a preventive inspection of the chimney and its cleaning without any problems, which is associated with the comfort of access.
A long-term chimney cap can only be made of corrosion-resistant iron: galvanized steel, aluminum and copper. In the latter case, the proposed metal has a pronounced decorative character, since its play in the sun can give your home a certain respectability.
They put a cap on the chimney pipe to extinguish sparks. This is one of his purposes. Therefore, the quality of iron must be good, thus it will not burn out for a long time.
Due to the fact that chimneys come in a variety of shapes and sizes, hood manufacturers also offer a wide range of products. If you decide to decorate your home and extend the life of the chimney, you will have to choose from a large assortment of wind vanes:
Attention! Often, weather vanes are supplemented with a variety of elements that provide one or another functionality: dampers, hinged doors, etc. Such details may bring some usefulness to the use of caps or decorate them, but they can also cause vibration in the chimney or the appearance of extraneous noise. In this regard, you should not buy too sophisticated deflectors.
Below we will consider how to make a visor on a chimney pipe of different types.
Initially, you should determine the dimensions of both the internal and external girth of the pipe. In this case, it is necessary to observe the maximum accuracy of the measurements. Then the stove hood sits on the chimney pipe in compliance with the density of such a connection.
The dimensions of the main parts must be in proportion to the inner diameter:
The correct calculation of the deflector parameters can only be carried out using a special table.
Installing the deflector is a fairly simple operation, but in case of non-compliance with the proportions, you can get a negative result of such installation in the form of a lack of the required thrust:
Keep in mind! Installation of the smoke shaft must be carried out in compliance with the height of its elevation above the roof level within 2 meters.
To make a visor on the chimney, we need the following scheme of work:
The chimney equipped with a hipped roof is a pyramid, the design of which includes 4 identical triangles. What is required in order to make a do-it-yourself cap on a chimney pipe?
In order for the chimney to turn out to be of the appropriate size, you must first make a drawing of it on cardboard. Then cut out the details, assemble the model and try it on the chimney. Next, you need to move according to this scheme:
Such a fungus on the chimney is installed easily and looks very nice.
A chimney of this type is most often mounted on metal pipes with a circular cross section. It is also called an umbrella on the chimney pipe.
How to craft it:
Since making a fungus on a pipe with your own hands requires some skill, you should stock up on additional material if you have to redo something.
All designs can be used not only on chimney pipes, but also on ventilation.
The cap on the chimney is also called a weather vane or chimney. It is necessary to increase traction so that dirt does not get into the pipe. The weather vane is an innovation, but it is also a tribute to antiquity. Now all cottages are equipped with caps.
To make correct calculations, you need to draw a visor on paper and write all the required dimensions. And from this drawing it will be easier to make a visor with your own hands.
According to the drawing it is necessary start cutting the titanium sheet and start bending the sheet according to the drawing.
Pipe Height (mm) | Pipe Width (mm) | Diameter (mm) |
145 | 245 | 120 |
170 | 285 | 145 |
250 | 430 | 210 |
500 | 840 | 420 |
658 | 1100 | 520 |
The service life of the visor depends on the material. You should pay attention to the material from which it is made. Since the visor is in an inaccessible place, there is no way to constantly monitor it. If the hood does not withstand weather conditions, the system will not work stably.
There are three types of work and troubleshooting:
Prevention is carried out for cleaning from soot. Professional help is not needed. It is necessary to monitor all parts of the furnace, clean from soot and ash.
A cap for a chimney can also be bought, the price for it is relatively inexpensive.
